For example, take the two lines of the Canto Inferno, where Virgil is asked what it means to be a lover of God. Verse one would then contain the verse; 'He was a lover of God, for he loved His Church, and He would gladly have won the love of Man,' and the line, 'But he loved her not.'The second poem, verse two would then be like this; 'He loved her not, for he loved the Holy Church, and because she was a lover of him.'
